A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” stated the national leader.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency finished the year before. This project was closely associated with his leadership's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in national projects. They were executed at an rapid pace, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an immediate halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
