Users Stopping Slimming Injections Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying such drugs should be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have discontinued the medication describe a intense resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural management.
